This Spring (2025), I went to Olympic Training Center in Beijing to learn from Olympic Gold Medalists’ coaches, trainers and therapists.
The Olympic training center offers a unique opportunity to dine within the same facilities as elite Olympic athletes. Access to their dedicated cafeteria requires the purchase of a ticket, priced at approximately 70 RMB (under $10 USD). This experience transcends the typical all-you-can-eat buffet, presenting a meticulously curated selection of exceptionally healthy fare.
Reflecting contemporary sports nutrition science, the offerings lean predominantly towards plant-based options, featuring an extensive and diverse array of vegetables. While the abundance of plant-forward choices is notable, the comparatively limited presence of animal-based foods within a buffet setting may initially seem unexpected.
A common misconception persists that top athletes, due to their high caloric expenditure, necessitate diets rich in high-calorie, high-protein, and consequently, animal-based foods. However, the reality is that the intense physical demands of elite training place significant stress on the athletes’ bodies, potentially hindering recovery. Beyond meeting essential macronutrient and caloric needs, a scientifically optimized dietary regimen for athletes prioritizes recovery through a wealth of micronutrients, antioxidants, polyphenols, and more. This necessitates a nutritional foundation that is largely plant-based, supporting both performance and recuperation.
intelligent buffet counter, designed to empower athletes who are managing their weight or specific nutritional needs. Simply place the plate on the integrated smart scale, and it will instantly tare to zero, ensuring accurate measurements. As you select your food, the system will automatically and in real-time display the calorie count, along with key macronutrient information such as protein, carbohydrates, and fats.
