This is very much in accord with the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine that you need to eat a balanced diet and all treatments have to be customized according to time and location. China defines a healthy BMI as 18.5 to 24. BMI 24~28 is defined as overweight. BMI 28 and above is obese. According to government statistics, 30% of Chinese adults are overweight and 17% are obese.
In the US, CDC defines a healthy BMI as 18.5-24.9 BMI 25-30 is overweight. Anything over BMI 30 is considered obese. And we have 30% overweight, 42% obese. So obviously we have a much unhealthy population. It reflects on healthcare spending, China spends around 6% of GDP on healthcare but the United States spends almost 18% on healthcare.
